How to get your viewers hooked
Did you know you often lose the largest chunk of your audience within the first few seconds of your video? If your opening doesn’t grab viewers immediately, they’re gone. In this blog post, I will share how you can improve your “hooks”.
How to get your viewers hooked
Nailing your hook is non-negotiable if you want to grow on YouTube (but it is important for any kind of video).
A strong hook keeps your audience engaged, improves audience retention, and ultimately helps your videos perform better in the algorithm.
More retention equals higher watch-time, which means more reach, more views, and more subscribers. It is a snowball effect.
You can see hooks as the “tryout” for the rest of the video. You need to prove that you deserve your viewers continued attention.
So, what exactly makes a hook good?
It boils down to two key things:
1️⃣ Spark curiosity
Your hook should tease enough to make viewers want to keep watching. Leave a question hanging, drop an intriguing statement, or promise a valuable insight.
2️⃣ Confirm the title
Reinforce your video topic right away. Viewers clicked because of your title or thumbnail so confirm that decision immediately by clearly repeating (or showing) what the video is about.
Here’s an example: Let’s say your video is titled “5 productivity hacks that will save you hours”. You could open with, “Most people waste 3-5 hours every single day without realizing it. But what if you could claim those hours back starting today? Let me show you how.”
See how that sparks curiosity AND confirms the video topic in just a few seconds?
It’s a small shift that can make a huge difference in keeping your audience hooked, improving retention, and maximizing your video’s performance on YouTube.
Now the real question is: did I hook you in this post? 🤓
