Learn to earn (as a creator)

Are you educating yourself as a content creator?
Well, if you are reading this, you probably are.

But what type of education you spend your valuable time on can determine whether you are moving towards becoming an independent individual or just a cog in the system.

In this blog post, I want to explain what I mean by that.

The world is changing fast right now.
Not only in terms of technology but society overall.

AI-tools are popping up left and right, media landscapes are changing, remote work is increasing, tasks and processes are getting streamlined or automated, robots are starting to replace people in certain industries, fake news and deepfakes are spreading, we are becoming more and more individualistic (instead of working on joined projects) etc...

With the current state of the world, it is very easy to feel overwhelmed and apply a negative mindset when following the news and I don't blame you.

We should react to these changes.
The question is just how to react in a constructive way.

What can you do as a content creator?
What can you do as a human?

In this context, it almost feels silly to talk about "content creation", because you might think that jpeg:s, "txt"-documents, and "mov"-files don't matter in the grand scheme of things. That your content won't "change the world". But I want you to rethink your role in this. All content is communication and communication is powerful.

I believe that it is more important now than ever to take a step back and look at things objectively. In what direction are you heading? What values are you sharing? Are you learning things right now that won’t matter in a couple of years? Will a robot be able to replace you?

Education has always been important in handling challenges and to move the world forward. People spend most of their childhood in schools, learning how to become workers and provide to society.
We learn. We try. We teach. It's the ecosystem of knowledge and development. As a content creator, you have a central part in this system.

After school, we usually go in one of two directions:

1. We get a comfortable job and you stay there until we retire (and as a "reward", we get to live on minimum wage after retiring).

2. We jump from workplace to workplace and learn new work-specific tasks at each workplace. (Until we become "redundant" and our employer decides to lay us off. Turns out, it wasn't a "family" after all.)

None of those alternatives are wrong and the second alternative might even make us feel like we are "developing" and "educating ourselves" as we start to climb the corporate ladder, and sometimes we are.

But there is a third alternative (that I think is even better).

If you truly want to stay relevant, secure your future, and make an impact, you need to think bigger. I'm not saying you need to become an entrepreneur, put yourself in front of a camera, build a huge YouTube channel, or a strong personal brand (although all of those things would probably be helpful for you), but you need to continue to educate yourself as an individual, not just in your role at your company.

You need to get a broader perspective of how the world works and learn to see patterns. You need to study topics outside of your niche and learn how they are connected to you. Topics like sales, marketing, biology, religion, politics, copywriting, human psychology, storytelling, AI etc...

Basically, you need to see yourself as the company.
Don't just be a part of the system. Be the system.

The expectation of you as a human being is increasing every day and costs are increasing every year.
But as you understand more and learn to "connect the dots" between insights, reflections, knowledge, and experience, you slowly become more independent and more resilient to challenges.

Don't fall into the trap of just programming yourself to become another worker who can follow orders. Think for yourself. Trust yourself. Speak up.
Take in new perspectives and question things around you. Big and small.
Become a thinking human instead of a human machine.

Does this mean that you have to become an entrepreneur and start your own business?
No.

What I'm saying is that you need to have your own back.
You need to take responsibility for the outcome of your life.
That could mean being an entrepreneur, but it could also mean working two jobs at 50% each or have one job combined with freelance work and multiple other income streams.

The combinations of money-generating activities are endless.
Having a full-time job is just one of many solutions.

"But you need a job to be safe", you might think.

When I was younger, I was relying on money for security.
Now, I rely more on my knowledge than my bank account.
I'm not afraid of being broke. I'm afraid of not being in control of my own life.

Your brain is the most complex asset you have and your knowledge is the most valuable (and reliable) currency for longterm safety and growth.
No one can take that away from you.

So today, I want you to ask yourself:
Are you building your knowledge base and experience or are you just building your bank account?

Think about your daily and weekly habits and actions.
How are they helping you move towards the person you want to be (and need to be) in 5-10 years?

Small daily efforts compound over time.
Input & output. Values & actions.
Start making that change today.
