Why more views is not better (for your YouTube channel)
Everyone wants views on their videos and more subscribers to their YouTube channel but getting more views is not always better. More views can sometimes actually hurt your channel more than it helps the channel.
In this blog post, I will share why that is the case and what you should do instead to help your channel grow.
Why more views is not better (for your YouTube channel)
What you want (for your YouTube channel to grow) is more views AND high audience retention from the right people.
You don’t want people to click your videos just to leave it after one minute. That will only send a signal to YouTube that the content they’re watching isn’t worth watching until the end.
And that is probably true for that viewer.
But at the same time, someone else (with other interests) might find that particular video super-valuable.
10 views from the right people can be much better than 100 views from the wrong people.
Finding your audience can also help YouTube know who to show your content to and that is usually when your channel starts to see growth.
This is why you shouldn’t ask your friends and family to watch your videos to “support” you (unless they are interested in the topic you are creating videos about).
Because if they watch one video and then subscribe to your channel, they will continue to get your new videos shown in their feed.
This might sound positive at first, but even if they click all your videos and watch a couple of seconds of each video, it will only hurt your audience retention, and if they don’t click your videos at all, it will hurt your click-through-rate, resulting in lower reach on your future YouTube videos.
So, how do you find the right people for your videos?
This isn’t a “quickfix” because then every channel would have the “right” audience. This is a strategic approach you do over time.
You do this by deciding on a certain niche (or direction), studying that niche, researching similar channels to see what titles and tags they are using, and creating content around topics within that niche with a high search volume but low competition (which tools like TubeBuddy can help you find.)
The more videos you create within your niche (while improving the content quality and video quality), the more reach you will be rewarded with by the YouTube algorithm.
Just trust the process and improve 1% with each video.
