Your best career path

Your parents are wrong. Let me explain why.

As you go through life and try to navigate different career options, it is common to seek advice or look to people ahead of you for guidance.

But since there are so many options available, you often get help narrowing down those options from teachers, coaches, parents, and friends. They pass on what they know and what they've done.

You also probably get asked the question "what do you want to become when you grow up" with the expectation that you will respond with a job title but what they're really asking (maybe unintentionally) is "how can I label you?" They want to know what box (symbolically speaking) they can put you in.

John Lennon once famously said:
“When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

In today’s complex world, answering this question is harder than ever.
We have more opportunities than our parents ever did, and if you for example have an ambition to become rich, successful or famous, the different ways to achieve this are vastly broader and more accessible thanks to digital advancements.

Your physical location doesn't play as big of a role in career options as it did before and there are way more options now to increase your income without having to increase the amount of hours you work.

The phrase "time is money" is becoming less relevant as we become smarter workers and get access to more advanced tools.
With the last few decades of digital advancement (internet, social media, automation, and artificial intelligence), "knowledge is power" might be a more fitting phrase for our time.

So, how do we navigate this complex world?

First, remember that you are more than your job title.
As humans, we are multi-dimensional creators with a variety of skills, needs, and interests.
(We are also not limited to ONE job at a time or ONE career path.)

Since a "job" is simply just "a way to make money", there are many jobs that you could pursue:

Doctor
Data Analyst
Project Manager
Social Media Manager
Course creator
Affiliate Marketer
Machine Learning Engineer
Online coach
Speaker
UX/UI Designer
YouTuber
Transcriptionist
Influencer
Therapist
Brand ambassador
Investor
Singer
Metaverse Strategist
Graphic Operator
Farmer
Digital product creator
Ghostwriter
Marathon runner
Graphic Designer
Virtual Assistant
Lawyer
Podcaster
Teacher
Model

This list could go on forever. Some jobs are harder than others to do full-time (while having financial stability) but the beauty is that you don't have to pick just one (if you don't want to).

Thanks to the technology that (most) people have access to and the fact that income isn't always in direct connection to "time spent", we can have multiple jobs and multiple income streams.

Today, you can design your lifestyle in a way that wasn't possible just 30 years ago. Education can be accessed online (a lot of it for free) and an income can be created from your living room, without any physical goods.
All you need is a laptop and an internet connection.

This is why I believe parents are finding it harder than ever to guide their children in the right direction and get them on the "right" path. They are overwhelmed by options and can (sometimes) struggle to keep up with their kids evolving interests and needs.

But instead of telling children what to do and where to go, I think the best approach might be to equip the next generation with communication skills, values, and other timeless tools to help them navigate the world effectively.

Because there is already a person who knows exactly what you were meant to do and that person is you.

It might not feel like you have the answer but you do.
It is inside you somewhere and you know it when you find it.
No matter how much the world evolves, no one else can ever read and decode YOUR gut feeling and your unique sense of purpose.

I can totally understand if you're feeling overwhelmed and confused about your life's direction and all your options with the volume of information we get exposed to every day.

In 1990, people in the U.S. consumed about 2.3 GB of information per day (across reading, media, and conversations) and made around 5,000–10,000 decisions per day.

In 2024, the average person consumes 74 GB of information daily (mostly from digital media like social media, streaming, and online news) and makes an estimated 30,000–35,000 decisions per day.

Yet, this is good news: You have more control and more options than ever!
The available sources of information are no longer limited.

As kids, a big reason why we want to "grow up" is because of the freedom we are told to get as adults. We can do (almost) whatever we want as grownups. When we have our own home and create our own income, we can also take our own decisions (no matter how strange your parents might think they are).

So take this opportunity and start shaping your life the way you want.

Try that business idea, move to that country, start that YouTube channel, create that digital product, reach out to that dream company you want to work for, get that van and start traveling the world...

The choices you make today will shape how your life will look like in 10 years. Not taking a decision is also a decision. 🧭

And this isn't about aiming for a specific job title.
It's about envisioning the life you want to live and the lifestyle you aim to have.

When you're living your ideal life, what do your workdays look like?
Because you do have to work. As humans, we need projects and a sense of purpose in life. The question is what project or projects you want to be working on and how your daily actions today move you closer to that reality.

What challenge do you want to have?

Taking the first step toward your dream life may be easier than you think. And if you don't know what that first step is, just try something and figure it out as you go. Finding the answers comes from you taking action. Inaction is worse than failure.

My life is nothing like I imagined as a kid.
I work mostly from home, make money in over 10 different ways, reach around 150 000 people monthly through my YouTube channel, and have worked with companies and people I couldn't even have dreamed of. I decide when and where I work and I get invited to podcasts, events, and trips only because of my online presence.

I am not a YouTuber.
I am not a freelancer.
I am not a video editor.
I am not a course creator.
I am not an affiliate marketer.
I am not a YouTube consultant.
I am not a digital product creator.

I am none of those things yet I do all of those things.

This was not the path my parents suggested.
I didn't even know this path existed until I got here.
But I'm grateful for where I've been, where I am and where I'm heading, and all of this came from exploration, curiosity, and dedication.

I tried what felt right in each moment and I shaped my path as I went.

I'm not sharing this to brag. I'm simply sharing this with an ambition that it might expand your mindset, your self-belief, and the way you see the world.

The world can sometimes feel like a prison, but it can also feel like a playground.
It all depends on what lens you view the world through, what actions you take, and your ability to stay optimistic enough to keep pursuing whatever your heart tells you to do, no matter how long it takes you to get there.
Your journey matters more than the end goal.
Don't live for your goal. Your goal IS to live.

The only true mistake that you can make on this amazing journey called life is to stop trying. You can adjust your path, start over, or turn around, but don't ever stop trying to become the best version of yourself.
