How to build confidence on camera

Confidence can be one of the hardest things to build as a content creator.
Especially as an introvert (like myself).

But it's very rewarding when you do.
(Further down in this blogpost I'll share 5 benefits of improving your “on camera confidence”. 👇)

I am 35 years old now but I didn't really put myself infront of the camera until I was 29 years old.

It was 2018 and it was the first video I uploaded to my YouTube channel where I was speaking directly to the camera.
Check it out here if you are curious.
 🫣

(I did some fun video projects with my friends as a teenager, that I never published online. I also think those videos should stay offline. 😂)

Some things I felt before I started were:
😟 What should I say and how should I say it?
😟 What if I look nervous?
😟 Do I really have some value to share?

And it's okay to feel like that. In fact, it's completely normal.

No one is expecting you to be perfect from the start.
(Sometimes it can actually be inspiring to see a nervous person fight their fears and film themselves.)

One important thing I've learned about content creation is that people care way less about you than you think. They are so busy with their own life and how people perceive them. That should be encouraging to know.

But to get practical... There are a few ways you can build your confidence.

1️⃣ Find your WHY
↳ So you don't question the motive behind the content

2️⃣ Understand your strengths (and use them)
↳ To bring existing confidence to your content

3️⃣ Practise, practise, practise
↳ Boring advice but there are no shortcuts

Once you start building your content creation confidence, it will only get easier (plus seeing your own progress will build the confidence even more).

You SHOULD feel like your previous videos are cringe.
That is a proof that you are developing.

Why it is good to practise “camera confidence”

There are many benefits of building “camera confidence”.
Of course, it helps you become a better speaker and communicator but it also helps you with a lot of other things.

One way to practise it is to film yourself editing a video and comment on everything you're doing (and explain why you're doing it).

👉 You'll realize that you know more than you think
👉 You'll understand your own thought process better
👉 You practise your communication skills
👉 You'll now have content to share on social media
👉 You'll have recorded instructions ready for another editor (if you want to outsource the work in the future)

Don't just share the end result. Document the process.
And improve your camera presence along the way.
