Trending vs Evergreen - What videos should you do?

You’ve probably heard of the terms “trending” and “evergreen” videos when you study YouTube and how to grow on the platform.

But what is the difference and what type of videos should you make?

In this short blog post I’m explaining this with two practical examples from my own channel (with 5,5 million views).

Trending vs Evergreen - What type of video should you make on YouTube?

A trending video is basically a video covering a trending topic. It could be some product release, an event that just took place, or just something that a lot of people talk about at the moment.

An evergreen video is a video that stays relevant over time. It could be an informational video about a method or strategy, a step-by-step guide, or best practise for doing something specific.

The first example (that I’m showing in the video that is linked below) is a trending video from an event (a football game) and the second example is an evergreen tutorial video.

The first one got a huge spike in views directly after publishing (thanks to me quickly getting it done and published right after the game).

The views then decreased a lot and never reached that same spike again. It then kept decreasing in daily views over time.

The second one didn’t get a lot of views in the beginning. But after some time, the daily views increased and then stayed at a higher level for a long period of time.

What type of video you want to do depends on the goal of the channel and if you are planning short-term or long-term.

Do you want to get views fast (trending) or actually grow the channel in a sustainable way (evergreen)?

A mix of both is not a bad approach.

I personally do a lot of evergreen videos in order to build momentum over time and continue to bring in views years later.
